Skill Stacking

Mitä on ”skill stacking”?

Jason Link kirjoittaa artikkelissaan ‘‘Skill stacking: Be awesome with average skills”, mitä ”Skill Stacking” eli taitojen yhdistäminen tarkoittaa. Hän viittaa artikkelissaan podcastiin jossa on vieraana sarjakuvapiirtäjä Scott Adams. Adams kertoo kuinka ”skill stacking” on auttanut häntä rakentamaan menestyksekkään uran.

”All you need to succeed is to be good at a number of skills that fit well together.” -Scott Adams.

”Skill stacking” on jatkuva prosessi.

SKILL STACKING

“Skill stacking is simply utilizing various skills that you have acquired throughout your life and combining them in a unique way that is individual to you and far more useful than the sum of each skill separately.” -Jason Link in “The Shortcut Talks” Apr 7, 2019

Many people battle with the problem that they are not extraordinary in any one particular skill, but rather average, or a bit above it, in many things related to or around said skill. I myself can very much relate to this problem, being quite good at a multitude of artistic hobbies but not excellent in any of them. This has long been a bit of an insecurity of mine, since I’ve grown up in a time and age of people mastering only one thing but mastering it so well that they separate themselves from others simply by being so good.

It is comforting to know, that even though I’m not so much above average at anything that I could make that one thing mine, I am good enough in a multitude of things that I can stack and use to create one unique thing. For example, I’m studying to be a goldsmith, but I already have experience with social media, a unique style, a lot of eye for beauty, a bit of a knack on simple photography and if I do say so myself, a lot of skill in customer service. I think this stack is optimal for me to create my own jewelry business and reach customers from social media and beyond.

The other comforting thing about skill stacking is that you don’t have to already have a set of skills that would compliment your one main thing. You can always take short courses and educate yourself on things that you think may help you create your optimal stack, without having to go through years and years of schooling to be perfect at any of them.

Your own stack can be categorized to so called soft skills and hard skills. Soft skills are essentially skills that a person has learned during their life subconsciously. For example kindness, empathy and good social skills. Then there are the hard skills, that are skills that a person has learned through schooling and work. Examples of skills like these could be language and coding skills, building machinery, or personnel managing. The great thing about skill stacking is though, that we don’t have to differentiate the value of hard skills and soft skills, cause both of these can be equally as important in building your business.

Personality essay

I’ve always found it difficult with these personality surveys, because the questions are so vague, and the answer would differ according to the situation I was asked it in. From this survey I got adventurer ISFP-T, at first I didn’t think adventurer described me.

But when I read the analysis based on my answers, I found it did describe me.

76% introverted: I have noticed that I spend a lot of time alone and that I need that alone time as my social battery drains quite fast. And being alone lets me ‘recharge’.
61% observant: I notice a lot of things that happen and what other people do around me.
54% feeling: I have always been sensitive to feelings, my own and others. Over time I have stopped reacting to things as easily, but when I was younger, I used to get sad or angry very easily.
65% prospecting: I don’t like planning many things because I know nothing can go perfectly as you plan when other people are involved. I prefer planning the start and then going with the flow.
74% turbulent: I have a lot of fast changes in how I feel, one second, I could be having fun with a friend and in the middle of talking I might start feeling unfocused and bored. I might also be at home reading and get a quick burst of energy and want to start making my own book or start cleaning.

“Beneath your easy-going exterior lies a heart of gold. Your empathy runs deep, and you have a genuine desire to understand and support those around you. However, you’re not one to wear your heart on your sleeve – your feelings often run deeper than others realize.” This is what it said about me, and I feel like it’s mostly correct.

Career path

  • My strengths in a workplace are:

Creative Expression & Practical creativity- I easily find ways to express meaning through my work or art.
Quick to adapt & Flexible approach- I find it easy to adapt to new situations, or even if things go sideways, I can stay calm and either fix what happened or make the best of it.
Genuine empathy- I often want to help others that I work with.
Attention to atmosphere- I’m almost always attuned to what the atmosphere around me is, and I try to keep it uplifted.

  • My weaknesses in a workplace are:

Lost in Routine- I easily lose interest of routines or fall of them, and if I fall off, I can’t bring myself to get back on track
Reluctant to Promote Yourself- I don’t network with people easily, nor do I talk about my works.
Easily Discouraged by Criticism- Getting negative feedback easily drops me off my motivation for the work and similar ones I might be doing at the same time.
Avoiding Long-Term Planning- I don’t like planning ahead because eventually those plans will fail, and I don’t want the added stress of trying to keep plans together. This makes it difficult to make timelines for any project I’m doing.

I know I can’t keep motivation in a workplace where I would need to do the same thing every day, I would be easily drained of my energy and lose interested in it. I need change in my routine, and I will need to look for a job that allows me to do that.

Conceptual Thinking: maybe I can think of ideas and used my imagination, thinking strategic thinking I can some do and think smart away`s but not always if I am under a lot of pressure or stress

Objective Judgment: not sure about make full choses if the question or what to craft haves a lot to notice

but follow facts or information from others I listen or put it at paper to remember it

I am unsure of respect, but I respect others, and I know I lack a lot of skills, and I look people by how they act or be as person or personally I trust people little but still don’t if I just meet them but if they someone I know while I trust them.

Independent Worker: I can work alone or in group but if work alone I can think more but teamwork is still good work.

at job this can affect or be connect to people, but I will try my best and be confident to talk and connect with people even if it makes me uncomfortable.

Ignoring Social Dynamics: neglect office politics and informal not sure but social stuff I rather neglect if it’s a lot of people or big event`s possibly missing cues or causing unintended misunderstandings can be possible but not sure

Overly Blunt Feedback: if I make mistakes, I am glad someone told me about if I haven’t notice, I don’t mind rude comments of the work if it`s mistake, get know my mistakes make me release my own mistakes and learn from them and not make same mistakes again and I maybe have bad memory but I learn by hands it comes from reflexes what make me not do same mistakes what I made it in past.

Frustration with Constraint:  from the test is not me

I follow ruler`s and plan`s or Oder’s I get and I follow the workplace ruler`s and I don’t get angry easy

Reluctance to Delegate Tasks: I underestimate my own skills sometimes but sometimes I feel confident of my skills. I easy stress up or get nervous but calm down in own time. I normally do my job what I been given or something what need be craft.

impatience with routine: I rarely feel impatient I am mostly patient most time, I wait get my work or stuff to do but at class I listen but if I am nervous or tried, I zone out then I think too much. if I fail too many times, I feel helpless and lack motivated.

(my opinion of the personal test)

was it being okay, but some questions were for me harder or easy to understand

‘

Personality test: ENTP -T (debater)

I’ve done a lot of these type of tests before and I know that I’m an ENTP so the test shows right at least at some point. It’s hard to think what kind of person I really am and you can’t always trust the tests.

Introvert or extrovert?

the test shows that I am an extrovert and I agree on that one, i see myself the one who is always talking and getting to know new people. I enjoy being around other people. i also love being alone at some points in my life but it’s always more comfortable to be around other people.

there are some days that my social battery is empty and i don’t want to talk to people but I think everybody has those days. my friends say that I’m the energic friends and it’s easy to come and talk to me.

I always thought that I was an introvert and I guess i was at some point in my life but as in now I see myself as an extrovert and I think you can see it.

Intuitive or observant?

according to the test I’m more intuitive and I believe it’s right. I would say I’m open-minded and like to think and focus on hidden meanings and distant possibilities. I’m very imaginative and it’s also good when reading books and i think that’s why I like to read.

but of course I also think about some things with not so open-minded way. and it’s really annoying to argue with me honestly. I always say I’m never wrong and I never admit being wrong.

Thinking or feeling?

I already knew I’m more thinking than feeling type of person and the test showed that too. I think everything many times through and for me it feels stupid to go with feelings more than thinking. I’m more logic person and I never let my feelings come before thinking things through.

and if you would ask me anything I literally can’t always answer them when I’m already thinking everything else. I can’t usually answer questions about my feelings because i don’t think about them or it’s just hard because they aren’t high up in my priorities.

Judging or prospecting?

the test says that I’m more prospecting than judging and i’m not so sure which one am I. it says I’m more likely to be very adaptable and yes i would say that, but for me it’s not always so easy. sometimes it takes a lot of time for me to adapt to something. and that’s one thing that annoys me a lot.

I’m very easygoing and flexible usually but sometimes I really can’t because I’m very stubborn about some things and can’t let them go. I’ve been told many times how stubborn I am and it’s not even that i don’t want to be, I like to be stubborn and annoy people.

the test says that I’m more likely to prioritize spontaneity over stability but I’m not so sure about I’t. it’s little here and there in my opinion.

Assertive or turbulent?

the test says that I’m turbulent and that means that I’m very self-conscious and I really agree on that. i’m so self-aware that it’s annoying at times when i see people that aren’t. in the test it says also that I’m sensitive to stress and that’s so true, I stress about stress and even before there is anything to stress about. it’s so draining and I can’t really change that, I’ve tried.

I would say I’m success-driven, I’ve always wanted to be successful and still want to of course who doesn’t. I’ve always had this vision of me and some other people have said it too.

success to everybody is different but to me it’s just being able to live how I want to, doing something that I love and somehow helping others. just overall being happy about something that I do.

I’m also really eager to improve. I think there is always a even better version of me and I want to be that person, sometimes it goes overboard but I mean that’s life. I think its fun to improve yourself and learn new things and just be better version of yourself everyday.

Persoonallistyyppi INFJ-T

Koulussa suunnitelmallisuus on erittäin tärkeetä.

81% levoton

Theatre trought technial revolutions, is third time really the charm?

As we know the origins of theatre trace back to 6th century B.C. in Ancient Greece. This still very pivotal era for theatrical development was more than 2500 years ago. Early performances were simplistic, often involving a single actor and a chorus. The actors had to project their voices across vast spaces, relying solely on the natural acoustics provided by the architectural design of theatres. Mathematics where able to create acoustics spaces  to carry the voice out to the top rows. More complex plays led to development of the skēnē, the structure at the back of a stage where actors could exit and change. Plays began to have props such as masks, evolving to costumes and a set pieces like ekkyklêma, a wheeled platform to bring back the dead.
Theatre art saw the rise and fall of Roman and medieval performance styles, then a rebirth of classical forms during the Renaissance. As well as the development of new ones like opera, Commedia dell’arte and Elizabethan and Jacobean drama, the classic of Shakespeare was born. Scenography got more formalized with the development of perpective, gaining further complexity through the work of artists.
During the First Industrial Revolution (mid-18th to mid-19th century) the general industry started to mechanize and the factory system grew. This economic transformation led to the rise of a new middle class, a group with both the disposable income and leisure time to indulge in cultural pursuits.  This era of technical revolution wasn’t just about industrial advancements but also about the technical aspects of art and thought, leading to a emphasized reason, structure, and a return to perceived classical forms in the arts. It changed the theatre by shifting it from rural to urban centers, to the construction of large commercial theaters in cities. The Second Industrial Revolution (mid-19th to early 20th century) introduced several technological advancements, such as the widespread use of electricity. The 19th century introduced limelight, which could be manipulated with lenses and reflectors to focus and direct light more effectively. Another critical development of this period was the expansion of transportation systems such as railroads. This made it easier for theatre companies to tour and reach wider audiences. With more diverse audience, new genres materialized. There during these a periods of significant technical and social changes neoclassical theather started to emerge. There was a rise of sentimental comedy, pantomime and melodrama, culminating in the large, professionally-run, and technologically-advanced theaters of the 19th-century.
After this Scenography started to evolve from flat, two-dimensional backdrops to immersive, three-dimensional sets, influenced by advancements in technology and changing social expectations. Key advancements include the use of electric lighting, there was a rise of scenographers who saw light as an integral part of the drama, leading to a holistic, multi-sensory approach to stage design that includes light, sound, and costume. Then became emergence of cinema.
Now we are living in the new third technical revolution: the digital. The ongoing transformation from analog and mechanical technologies to digital ones began in the latter half of the 20th century. The reality where pleasure and leisure revolve around digital forms. How does it affect acting and dramaturgy or the technical set industry? The new era brings a generational crisis within. Young people of the world who consume screentime more than ever, with the equipment and entertainment at their fingertips, going on venue becomes a threshold issue. Will they become adults who are not used to going to the theatre? Meanwhile the government has a negative attitude towards culture as fundings are being cut. The theater’s profit-oriented funding is based on serving the audience that already goes to the theater. A difficult starting point in a situation when trying to find a new audience among the youth.
Advanced technology also has a huge prize tag on it. Today’s theatres incorporate sophisticated technologies including advanced lighting systems and sound amplification. Lighting technology alone has also undergone significant transformations. From the open-roof designs for natural light, through invention of the light bulb, to LED technology and advanced electrical systems allow for precise adjustments in brightness, colour, and patterns. Sound effects and music no longer need to create these elements from scratch since all is online. Modern microphone technology of tiny hidden mics connected to advanced sound systems with speakers strategically positioned around the theatre to provide a clear and balanced sound. Compared to the historical fact of the amphitheaters were built built using sophisticated principles of geometry just for the sound. Props and set making utilize automation, 3D printing and CNC. These enhance the visual and auditory experience of the crowd but also expand creative possibilities for set and costume designers. Moreover, the integration of digital technologies such as projection mapping and augmented reality has opened new avenues for creating immersive environments on stage. These tools blurring the lines between reality and theatrical illusion allow for dynamic backgrounds and special effects that were unimaginable in earlier eras. The evolution of theater technics has seen a dramatic shift from traditional manual methods to advanced, digital systems in short time. Unfortunately what comes to materialization less and less set pieces are made in the theatres and produced cheaper outside. In-house workshops are decaying. Non ethical online shops like Temu are being used. The industry’s workforce is in transition, digitalisation is reducing the need for labour. Growth driven attitude with less money means more pollution, more class differences, more poverty, more non ethical labour and modern slavery globally.  And here I am, the tormented scenic artist.
