what is skill stacking?
People often try to be perfect in one skill they have…but they don’t think about skill stacking which makes them unique. Skill stacking means combining different skills to make yourself unique and effective. Trying to be the best in one skill is hard and there is always people who are better than you but when you stack your skills, nobody can be like you.
using skill stacking as an interior designer
For example, if we talk about interior designers. Interior designers often try to be perfect in designing but they don’t always realize that the best thing might be by combining different skills they have. As an interior designer, if you, for example, have a good eye for colors, know how to read your clients, are good at designing, and love using your imaginary and creativity, you can become an interior designer that no one can replace. Someone is always better in designing than you but if you combine your semi-good skills, you are hard to copy so you are the only kind of interior designer like that. Interior designers stand out from others because by stacking their skills they make themself more valuable and versatile.
how to start stacking your skills?
You can start by identifying your main strength-something you are good at or something you like to do. Then you need to choose some complementary skills that supports the main one. You don’t need to be perfect in any of the skills you choose, and that’s the point of skill stacking. What matters the most is how those different skills work together to make you unique.
and then the challenges?
First of all, learning multiple skills takes time and sometimes the progress might seem slow. Building a valuable stack requires months or years of practicing and learning. When you try to learn multiple skills at the same time, you might lose the focus and interest. It’s important to learn only one skill at a time. Not every combination of skills creates value. You need to think carefully which skills you combine. By starting to stack your skills, you need to be patient and motivated. In the end, your well-stacked skills become powerful and your personal value increases. So its all worth it.
what do i think about skill stacking?
Before reading that article from Jason Link, I had never heard a word about skill stacking. But now after founding out what it means, I think it’s genius! It’s well thought that you don’t need to be the best in one thing, but you can still be the best by using your semi-good skills. I hope when I’m starting my career, I have enough motivation to start stacking my skills.
