Skill stacking simply means piling up the different skills you’ve accumulated throughout your life to achieve your goals. You don’t need to be perfect at any single thing, but if you know many different skills, it can be more valuable and make your abilities more unique. Take time to think about your abilities and then fill in the gaps you need to learn to create the perfect stack for yourself.
To succeed, it’s enough to be good at many skills that go well together. -Scott Adams
Mastering one skill completely is great, but the point is, you can be amazing without mastering any skill perfectly. Some people are naturally better at certain things, but that doesn’t stop anyone from learning them. Once you know how to do something, like riding a bike, you can still do it after a long break because it’s stored in muscle memory. It’s not always enough to just rely on the skills you’ve learned in the past; for your skill set to grow, it’s worth learning new things that will take you in a direction that suits you and your interests.
Working in the interior design field requires an aesthetic sense, creativity, and a good ability to understand space and light. An interior designer also needs a good eye for color as well as knowledge of structures and materials. The job can include tasks such as designing different areas of a home, designing public spaces, styling, interior consulting, project management, and importing and selling interior products.
I have a good visual eye and I think I’m able to understand and plan spaces. I’ve gained knowledge of structures and materials from my previous studies as a surface treatment worker/building painter. I personally really enjoyed drawing when I was younger and I think I’m relatively good at it, even though there was a longer break from drawing at some point. But still, it’s a skill I could and should practice more. Painting is also a skill I’m good at, and I’ve painted a lot. I can use these skills in my future career as an interior designer. I probably can’t even list all the other skills I have right now. The article inspired me to think about my own strengths and skills and also highlighted the skills that I especially want to develop and strengthen in the future.
